Appeals of Family Law Judgments
Appeals may occur when it appears that there was an abuse of discretion on the part of the lower court judge or an incorrect legal standard was applied to the case. Although appealing a family court ruling can lengthen a legal dispute, sometimes it is a critical step in righting a wrong that occurred during a divorce or family law case.
Appeals in divorce and family law are nuanced, and it is important that an attorney is very experienced at handling these sorts of cases. Family law expert Carin Porras is widely respected for her detailed and thoughtful approach to family law appeals.
Any type of family court judgment can be appealed, but most family law appeals pertain to:
- Awards of alimony
- Child custody and parenting time determinations
- The amount of child support awarded
- Division of property in a divorce settlement
Referrals from Other Attorneys
Most family law attorneys do not handle appeals given their highly detailed nature. As a result, Brydger & Porras partner Carin Porras regularly receives referrals from other attorneys to handle their appeals. As a past-chair of the Florida Bar’s Family Law Section, she has earned the respect of her peers statewide.
